Do Opposites Attract?

I never actually talked about what happened with The German in fear that she may be hurt by it. I received an email from a reader wondering what happened to The German. So here is the story:

Remember when I went to Boston to visit her? Okay, well the weekend went well. I met a couple of her friends and they were absolutely charming. We hung out, walked around…I got to know her better but with every hour passing by, I realized that I was not attracted to her like the way you would if you wanted to date someone. Its not that she was dull or unattractive, I just didn’t feel a connection between us. Usually, if I don’t see a connection within the first few minutes I am talking to you face to face, I just give up and let it go. I hate wasting my time, and I sure hate wasting other people’s time. She might actually feel the same way, I am not too sure. In fact, after I came back to NYC we hardly spoke. I wasn’t trying to be malicious. I just couldn’t tell her that there wasn’t anything…I have a really hard time admitting to someone that there is no possible chance. I don’t like seeing people getting hurt (I’m sure she wouldn’t be hurt). Even with The Gym Addict, I broke up with her via email (sad and pathetic - I know) because I couldn’t see her getting all emotional and crying (I think she cried actually). I can’t deal with super emotional people. That is why I work in a field where you have to be a cold blooded asshole.

But anyway, like I said before, The German is someone that I really enjoyed talking to. Although we have a few things in common - the arts, dining and museums but on that scale, there were a lot of things we didn’t share. We were both raised differently, so we have different views on a lot of things. This is why I always say that I get involved with people with the similar background as me. It is easier to deal with, I don’t have to lower my standards for someone, instead I am on the same eye level. I like it that way. It has always been that way. I cant change for anyone. In fact isn’t it one of the rules of dating? Be yourself.

She is an intelligent girl, she has a lot going for her. She is currently in Grad School in NYC - for Textile something, I have to confess that I still have no idea what it is. I just don’t get it. I’m sure its super exciting but it is one of the few things that I have a mental block on. I don’t know why. I am so traditional in that sense, I am used to traditional master programs. Does that make me ignorant? But whatever floats her boat.

We are two extremely different people. I always hear that opposites attract- I call that bullshit. Whoever can tell me that they are currently with someone who is the complete opposite, I‘d give them 5 bucks. You got to have a few things that you can relate to whether it was the way we were both raised or the type of schools we went to or the lifestyle we each lead. Truthfully, I just thought that I was really different from her. When I spoke to my friends about The German, they were always wondering why her, what is so special about her.

It is again one of those theoretical questions about relationships that no one really know the answers to.

The Weekend - Part II

…Walking is one activity I had to do and hardly enjoyed except for the walk The German and I took along the JP pond. We literally walked everywhere – to get breakfast, to grab coffee I mean everywhere except when we went to see Peter Li in Saugus. If you are ever in the Boston area and you are starving you should head to Saugus (forgot the restaurant’s name) and have some Saugus wings. They were a delight.

Saturday morning, I woke up next to The German, her arms wrapped up around my waist and I must have wondered where the fuck I was. It was early- around 7am. I am an early bird, so I woke her up and asked if we could grab coffee. We did a quick dressing and went out (walked) to this really cute cafĂ© – something you would find in the east village. We decided that we were hungry, we headed to a cute restaurant not too far from the coffee place and ordered some ginormous omelets, which I couldn’t finish because I felt like I had the worst hangover of my life – head pounding, eye blurring and all. I probably looked like shit, but whatever.

When we were done, we walked towards the JP Park and sat on a bench and people watched while I nursed on my coffee and The German was in doggy land. We talked to almost every dog that walked by us. It was cute. She is so fond of dogs that it is just heavenly.

The afternoon crawled in and we found ourselves in a car heading to Saugus for the famous wings. We had a couple of volcanoes, ate for the children in Africa and stogged our life away.

That night was the Old School Hip Hop Party. I blinged myself out, track suited my shit to the top, diamonds in my ears and fingers and I was old school FO SHO! I wasn’t expecting lots of people to dress up, but The German’s roommate (lets call her Queen) along with The German dressed up. Once we arrived at the shindig, almost everyone had their costumes on. It was pretty cute.

The night ended with The German and I….

The Weekend - Part I

I ventured out to RedSox land for the weekend to visit The German. For those who haven’t been to Boston and are Yankees fans, DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT go. You would seriously feel the need to bust out some NY punches because I swear everyone I saw had on redsox tee-shirts. Although I am a hardcore fan of Blue and Orange (for those who don’t know baseball – It’s the METS) I felt awkward walking the streets loaded with Bostonians completely dressed in Bosox gear. They have a huge pride for their home team and sadly we do not. It’s not the same. The hate is stronger. The love is stronger. It’s one of those love it or hate it. But love it ‘till you die kind of thing.

I hopped on the Chinese bus sans the chicken and goats attached on the side of the bus and headed to Boston MA. The ride was splendid. I slept through most of it and attempted to read my book but I was too far interested in looking out the window and looking at nature. There is something definitely peaceful about that.

I arrived in Boston around 3:30p and headed outside for a quick cig break and read the paper while I waited for The German to get out of work. After an hour or so, I got in a cab and went to The German’s job. We took the subway and headed to her house. By the way, for us NYC folks, the subway system goes by either numbers or letters, theirs go by colors.

But anyhow, we got home, switched my outfit and headed south to a Melissa Ferrick boat cruise with a couple of her friends. I couldn’t think of anything gay-er than a MF boat cruise loaded with lezies of all sorts and even to my surprise, there were heteros. Melissa was great, funny and witty and absolutely adorable. I had a great time and so did The German. C’mon I am so charming, who wouldn’t want to be in my presence?

The German was as splendid as MF. We unquestionably connected and with every conversation we had – even the tiny ones were priceless. I know its sounds corny, but I actually never felt connected to someone like that in a very long time. She has brain and she can actually hold her liquor – two of my favorite things.

And then…

Kissing The German

See the story behind this title is actually very exciting. Ok, probably not for you, but definitely for me.

The German is someone I just met. We exchanged emails during the past weeks and we perfectly hit it off, we speak on the phone very often and our conversations are as thought we’ve known each other for a long time. They were just flowing, and I can’t even think of any awkward silent moment, that’s how intense and great they are. Besides the fact that she is extremely smart, witty, and cute and a hot German and…into the Arts and dining and museums, she is absolutely the sweetest person you will ever meet. I joke about how she will have to toughen up once she is in NYC.

The German endured a 4 hr bus ride from Boston just to come see me in the city on Saturday (for just a couple of hours). First, I didn’t know she came down sorely to have dinner with me. If I knew then, I probably would have asked her not too but I am glad she did. I had an amazing time and so did she.

We started off at this Afghani restaurant in midtown, which did not look great from the outside, nor inside but we walked in and absolutely not a soul in the restaurant. Sometimes, I really hate being the only person eating somewhere, but this place wasn’t too appalling. Of course, I let the German chose what to eat since I had no clue about Afghani dishes. Whatever she ordered was delicious. I definitely recommend Afghani food. So we order, and I ask for the wine list – there were none. I got nervous and was thinking, “What am I going to do without wine?? I don’t want to look like I am nervous” I ran across the street to a deli and grabbed whatever red wine they had on the shelf. Let me tell ya, drinking wine eased the situation a lot better. The German noticed that I wasn’t making any eye contact and was completely aware that I was nervous (she told me the next day). First, I do NOT get nervous around ladies. I am usually the one who makes them nervous. But there is something about this German. I wasn’t nervous to the point where I was stuttering or had sweaty palms or shaking uncontrollably. I was just not making eye contact at first (on the subway or at the restaurant). But when I did, I noticed how splendid her eyes were and how she really – really looked right at me when she talked.

So then, we finished the wine, food was delicious and we wanted to grab some dirty cocktails. We walked over to Mercury Bar, which is one of my favorite places to hang. It’s really trendy and they have really good Calamari. We had our drinks and talked and I got to know her a lot better and vice versa – although, I think I revealed some things that I never tell anyone. Guess it’s a good sign.

By the way, on our way to Mercury, we stopped at a corner (red light of course) and talked about our abs. Seriously, I think only lesbians compare their abs. It’s like this conversation starter –“hey, you have great abs, so do I, do you want to see?” c’mon, I don’t think heteros even think about that.

Fast forward – we decided that it was time for us to get going (1. I didn’t want her to see me getting buzzed, 2. She had to catch her train). We ended up walking to Grand Central and along the way, listened to our ipods and compared our playlist. Ya know, you can tell a lot about someone just by what they listen to.

Anyway, we get to GC… stuff happened… and I am not telling.

Ok, ok, usually I don’t talk about my dates especially when they have the URL to this blog. But since she kept insisting and well actually asking if I would blog about what we did…I had doubts. I didn’t want to because I don’t want to jinx anything. Plus, at first I didn’t want to say anything as I realize that the skankier and crazier my stories are, the better received they are by you, my readers. So I figured I should just continue writing as normal. A Lezzie who talks about a non-disastrous date is not interesting, right?

I know the German will read this and already knows what I think of her, but you don’t. I must say that she personifies many of the things I’ve always been attracted to (humor, passion, drive, sense of adventure, deep respect, love for the Arts), but – and what I think is most interesting – is that she’s also a lot of things I never thought I would want (a lady from Boston and a Yankees fan – although she did accept an intimate switch to the METS). Yet, these opposite attributes actually make “it” work.

So what’s so special about The German? Here’s a “short” list:
- She likes my writing.
- She thinks I’m funny.
- She’s funny.
- She knows how to pick a fucking incredible dish off a menu that’s foreign to me.
- She loves my work – other ladies think its lame and I work too much.
- She’s good at what she is passionate about.
- She makes me feel comfortable.- She TOTALLY gets all my dependencies – Angelina Jolie, the U.N., Writing.
- She makes fun of me – I was the president of the GLBT club back in college.
- I make fun of her – she was the secretary of Student Government.
- We both went to liberal colleges and were the hot Lezzie everyone wanted.
- She’s from Boston, but knows how to get around in NYC –not by cab but by subway.
- She has an amazing vocabulary.
- She’s a grownup and doesn’t deal with drama.
- She said I was better looking than Mariah Carey.
- She says sweetie in a very kind and genuine tone of voice.
- Her nickname (not given by me) is Christ and Jesus.
- She is a gal from Boston who likes the Yankees and who is a really good kisser and who isn’t scared of taking a shot of lemon-drops with me.

Ok now I should stop before I embarrass myself any more than I already have.
